Child of Sussex Awards 2014: Community Award
It was with great pride that staff members from Helenswood Academy accompanied Aimee Wright to the Child of Sussex Awards 2014, at the Grand Hotel Brighton on Friday 31st October.
Aimee had been nominated in the Community Award category. Aimee has just completed her GCSEs at Helenswood Academy and for the past five years she has been a dedicated fundraiser for Demelza House Hospice Care for Children. She has personally raised in excess of £3,500. Aimee has worked hard year on year to provide opportunities for our students and staff to support a local charity through creative and enjoyable events such as bring and buy sales, talent shows and a balloon release.
More recently, in her final year with us, Aimee inspired her teachers to commit to the cause. She managed to support a group of her teachers through months of training in the wind, the rain, the snow and the hills of Hastings in order to complete the Hastings Half Marathon, including the Head Teacher who had never even contemplated taking up running before! Well over a thousand pounds was raised to support Demelza. After the challenge, all of the teachers have remained active and plan to run the Half Marathon again in 2015.
Aimee has touched the lives of many people through her charity work and has been a driver of an ethos in the school to support the local community. She is a very special young lady.
