Helenswood's finest orators were very impressive in their performances. They certainly met the requirements of being warm, engaging and inquiring.

On Tuesday 12th February, three Year 10 students from Debate Club went along to the Brighton and Hove heat of the English Speaking Union's Public Speaking Competition, competing alongside several schools from Brighton area. Suhayalah Yusuf delivered an impressive speech on the topic of 'Britain should pay reparations for its role in the Empire' to an audience of students, teachers and judges, responding articulately to some difficult questions from the audience afterwards. Faheda Kuayam and Oleta Adams formed part of another team, chairing and questioning a speaker on 'the power of words', revealing their skills in close listening, summarising and perceptive inquiry. Oleta Adams won the prize for 'Best Questioner' at the event, and all three got some fantastic feedback from the judges on their performances. We look forward to going back next year!
