Tracking Arts Learning and Engagement
Ark Helenswood is recognised nationally as a school that is at the forefront of arts education. At a crucial time for arts learning in the UK, we continue to recognise the arts as a vital part of our students’ learning and development.
We have been chosen to take part in a major national scheme which will track the effectiveness of arts education and the students’ learning and engagement over a three year period. The programme involves a partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Tate modern and Nottingham University and we have been chosen to take part as a recognition of the high quality arts work that we deliver.
The most recent blog from our first TALE assessor in the school can be read at TALE Blog.
Jerwood meets Parkwood
Parkwood A Level Dance students visited the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings to create a site-specific dance and film project.
The students based their work on the present exhibition by artist, Basil Beattie. His large paintings exhibited in the main gallery were the stimulus for work on tunnels, stairs, corridors and ladders.
The dancers choreographed both inside and outside the gallery, using many different spaces and levels.
The film will be edited and presented at the Helenswood Dance Show in March 2013 and also given to the Jerwood to be shown in their education suite.
The students said “ We had an amazing day at the Jerwood Gallery, immersing ourselves in art, dance and film. We learnt how to work alongside the large colourful canvases of Basil Beattie and at the same time incorporated the physical elements of the building which all contributed to our understanding of choreography.
Thank you to the Helenswood and Jerwood staff concerned and a special thank you goes to Magdalen and Lasher for their generosity, as this project would not have gone ahead without their funding.
