Helenswood officially the best secondary school in Hastings for the fourth year running

Ark Helenswood is the best-performing secondary school in Hastings and the school securing the best results in traditional academic subjects, according to new official statistics.

Provisional data released by the Department for Education show that Ark Helenswood Academy show that the school is the best-performing in the town this year against three official measures.

For the fourth year running, the school had the highest percentage of students getting at least five good GCSEs, including maths and English, with 62% of students achieving that level this summer – five percentage points ahead of the next-highest set of results.

In addition, Ark Helenswood has the highest percentage of students achieving the English Baccalaureate, which requires students to get at least five good passes in traditional academic subjects. More than one in five of Ark Helenswood students achieved the English Baccalaureate, as opposed to one in ten at each of Hastings’ other secondary schools.

Valued highly by universities and employers, the English Baccalaureate requires students to achieve good passes in maths, English, science, a language and either history or geography.

To round it off, Ark Helenswood is the joint most-improved school in Hastings, with the proportion of students achieving at least five good passes jumping 11 percentage points. Only The St Leonards Academy, whose results went from 46% to 57%, matched Ark Helenswood’s improvement.

Among those students at Ark Helenswood who achieved particularly good results was Hira Hussain, who got two A*s and eight As. Hira, who is now at Ark Sixth Form East Sussex, said: “The revision classes really helped, and the teachers were brilliant. They were so supportive.”

Ark Helenswood Academy is a member of the high-performing Ark network of schools, which also includes Ark William Parker Academy, Ark Blacklands Primary Academy and Ark Little Ridge Primary Academy.

Both Ark Helenswood Academy and Ark William Parker have seen huge improvement in their results in recent years. The proportion of students achieving five good GCSEs including English and maths at Ark William Parker has gone up 12 percentage points since joining the Ark network.
